WATCH | Suspected cable theft sparks methane gas explosion in Johannesburg
An attempted cable theft may have triggered a methane gas explosion in a Johannesburg sewer servitude, damaging three manholes, paving and part of a road.
Executive Mayor Dada Morero visited the scene on Sunday afternoon and received a briefing from the City’s Emergency Management Services (EMS) chief and officials on the ground.
Preliminary information indicates that the attempted theft of cables may have ignited methane gas that had accumulated within the sewer servitude.
The blast lifted three manhole covers and damaged the manholes, surrounding paving and a small section of the road.
No injuries have been reported.
