10th woman’s body found at Tembisa cemetery as Ekurhuleni killings probe widens

The body of a woman was found naked at Mooifontein Cemetery in Tembisa on Saturday morning, adding to a growing number of women found dead across Ekurhuleni in recent months.

The discovery brings to 10 the number of women whose bodies have been found in the wider area since July, following nine previous discoveries in and around Kempton Park, Olifantsfontein, Thembisa, Springs and Boksburg.

Police have not confirmed whether the cases are connected and investigators are continuing to examine possible links between the deaths. A multidisciplinary team has been deployed to investigate the cases.

The first body was found on July 15 in an open veld near the R21 in Pomona, Kempton Park. A second woman was found half-naked along the R21 on August 24 and was later identified as 32-year-old Itumeleng Kekana.

A third body was found in Rhodesfield, Kempton Park, on September 10, followed by the body of 38-year-old Elizabeth “Tsontso” Moselakgomo in Rhodesfield two days later.

The fifth body was found near the R21 close to Olifantsfontein on September 14. Another was discovered in KwaThema, Springs, on September 15, while a seventh was found in the Kaalspruit River behind Mall of Thembisa in Clayville.

An eighth body was found in Olifantsfontein before the ninth was discovered in Dawn Park, Boksburg, on September 17.

The latest discovery at Mooifontein Cemetery places the investigation even closer to Tembisa, which borders the Kempton Park area. Police are expected to provide further details on the circumstances surrounding the latest death.
