Hundreds of migrants in the Western Cape's Winelands in South Africa, have allegedly been detained for almost two months following arrests that began on 30 June. The Western Cape Coalition Against Xenophobia says as many as 200 people are being held in overcrowded conditions in towns.
The coalition alleges that detainees include young women who have been traumatised, as well as people who are ill and require medication or hospital treatment. It also claims that some people with valid documentation have been caught up in the arrests.
The coalition is now accusing the police and immigration authorities of denying detainees proper access to information, legal processes and basic humanitarian assistance.
