Two Tanzanian nationals arrested with dagga worth R1.5 million at Baobab Tollgate

Two Tanzanian nationals have been arrested after police seized nearly one tonne of dagga worth an estimated R1.5 million at Baobab Tollgate in Limpopo.

The suspects, aged 32 and 41, were arrested on Friday after members of the Beitbridge Port of Entry Task Team stopped their white Toyota Hilux during a roadblock at about 11am.

Police became suspicious when the men told officers they did not have the keys to the padlock securing the vehicle's canopy.

The officers instructed them to proceed to the Beitbridge border facility, where the canopy was opened in the presence of the occupants.

Police discovered 33 bags containing 991.5kg of dagga, with an estimated street value of approximately R1.5 million.

The two men were arrested and are expected to appear in the Musina Magistrate's Court on Monday, facing charges related to dealing in dagga.

Limpopo provincial commissioner Lieutenant General Jan Scheepers commended the police officers for their vigilance.

“Vigilance and teamwork remain our strongest weapons against drug trafficking,” Scheepers said.
