Two suspected armed robbers die in crash hours after Dennilton filling station robbery

Two suspected armed robbers died in a motor vehicle crash in Limpopo on Tuesday morning, hours after a violent business robbery at a filling station in Dennilton.

Police said the two men, aged 34 and 35, were allegedly involved in the robbery at a filling station at Moteti Complex in the Sekhukhune District.

According to police, about 13 armed men stormed the filling station at around 02:30. The suspects, armed with handguns and rifles, allegedly accosted security guards and a cashier before forcing their way into the cash office.

They allegedly used an explosive device to breach the drop safe and stole an undisclosed amount of cash.

The group then fled on foot while firing several shots.

At about 05:10, police received information that a white Nissan Navara with Mpumalanga registration plates had overturned along the R573 between Slaagboom and Siyabuswa, towards Marble Hall.

When police arrived, they found two men inside the vehicle.

The driver was certified dead at the scene, while the passenger was taken to a local hospital with serious head injuries. He later died while receiving treatment.

Police recovered an R5 rifle, two R5 magazines containing 56 rounds of ammunition, two 9mm pistols, an empty 9mm magazine and one 9mm round from the vehicle.

Preliminary investigations positively linked the firearms and ammunition recovered from the vehicle to the two deceased suspects and the Dennilton filling station robbery.

Police investigations into the robbery and the identities of the other suspects are continuing.
