Two minors among eight killed in N17 head-on crash
Eight people, including two minors, were killed in a head-on collision on the N17 toll road between Ermelo and Davel in Mpumalanga early on Sunday morning.
The crash happened near the Ermelo Toll Plaza at about 01:30 and involved a Toyota sedan and a Volkswagen sedan.
According to the Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison, seven of the deceased were travelling in the Volkswagen, while the eighth victim was the sole occupant and driver of the Toyota.
No other injuries were reported.
The cause of the crash has not yet been established. Authorities said an investigation was under way, while reckless and negligent driving could not be ruled out.
Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison Jackie Macie urged motorists to exercise caution, particularly when visibility is affected.
“Motorists must obey the rules of the road and adjust their driving in line with prevailing weather and road conditions. Greater vigilance is a must, especially when visibility is affected,” Macie said.
Macie also extended his condolences to the families of the deceased.
The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash is continuing.
