Two foreign nationals arrested after Hawks uncover R100m mandrax lab in Erasmia
Two foreign nationals have been arrested after the Hawks uncovered an alleged drug manufacturing laboratory producing mandrax tablets worth an estimated R100 million at a smallholding in Erasmia, Pretoria.
The suspects, both in their late 30s, were arrested on Wednesday, 9 September 2026, during a multidisciplinary operation involving the Hawks' South African Narcotics Enforcement Bureau (SANEB), Crime Intelligence, K9 West Rand and the Special Task Force in Pretoria.
According to the Hawks, the operation followed information received about a drug manufacturing laboratory allegedly operating on a smallholding in Erasmia.
The team followed up on the information and visited the premises, where they allegedly discovered a fully operational drug laboratory.
The suspects were allegedly manufacturing mandrax tablets, with the drugs estimated to have a street value of about R100 million.
Investigators also uncovered what appeared to be a newly established drug laboratory on the premises, where the suspects were allegedly preparing to manufacture crystal methamphetamine.
The arrests form part of a broader national law-enforcement effort involving the South African Police Service, Hawks, Customs and other agencies to intensify operations against the manufacturing and distribution of illicit drugs.
The suspects are expected to appear in the Pretoria Magistrates' Court on Friday, 11 September.
