Ten arrested, nine firearms recovered after Cleveland shootout with police

Gauteng police arrested 10 suspects and recovered nine firearms and live ammunition following a shootout in Cleveland, Johannesburg, on Monday night.

The suspects, aged between 30 and 54, were arrested at about 19:36 after police spotted a suspicious Hyundai H100 fitted with blue lights and a siren during patrols.

According to police, the vehicle repeatedly stopped when officers approached before driving away. Police called for backup and continued following the vehicle.

When it eventually stopped, three suspects allegedly got out and opened fire at police, resulting in a shootout. Two suspects fled on foot, while a third was fatally shot.

Police then searched the vehicle and found 10 suspects inside. Nine firearms, magazines and live ammunition were recovered.

Cleveland police are investigating cases of murder, attempted murder, attempted business robbery, and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

The arrested suspects are expected to appear in court soon. Police investigations are continuing.
