‘Serial rapist’ allegedly linked to 34 cases finally arrested in Gauteng

Gauteng police have arrested a 44-year-old man who is allegedly linked to 34 serious criminal cases, including multiple rape cases committed in and around Klipgat, Ga-Rankuwa, Loate and Mabopane.

Alfred Sello “Long” Magoa was arrested by members of the Gauteng Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Serial and Electronic Crime Investigation (SECI) Unit in Mabopane on Saturday, following an intensive investigation.

Police spokesperson Captain Tintswalo Sibeko confirmed the arrest.

According to Sibeko, Magoa had been wanted in connection with several rape cases, including cases reported in the Moretele area.

He is allegedly linked to 34 cases, including rape cases committed between 2008 and 2016 in various areas around Tshwane.

Police further allege that Magoa escaped from lawful police custody in December 2019 and had been on the run since then.

His arrest marks a significant breakthrough in efforts by Gauteng police to track down suspects linked to serious and violent crimes, particularly offences against women and children.

Magoa is expected to appear in the Ga-Rankuwa Magistrate's Court on Monday, where he is expected to face charges relating to the cases against him.
