School searches uncover weapons, ammunition and drugs in Ekurhuleni

Dangerous weapons, ammunition, drugs, alcohol and other prohibited items were seized during school safety searches at four schools in Etwatwa and Daveyton on Wednesday.

The operation was conducted by the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) K9 Unit and Eastern Region Social Crime Prevention Unit, working with the South African Police Service (SAPS), Gauteng Traffic Wardens, the Department of Education and other law enforcement agencies.

Searches were carried out at Mabuya, Rivoni, Lekamoso and Phandimfundo Secondary Schools as part of efforts to improve safety at schools and prevent learners from becoming involved in crime and substance abuse.

Among the items found in the possession of learners were vapes, Cuba substance, ziplock bags containing dagga, cigarettes, matches, ammunition, alcohol and knives.

Authorities said the operations were also aimed at educating learners about the consequences of carrying dangerous weapons, using drugs and becoming involved in criminal activities.

The EMPD said the findings highlighted the need for parents, educators, law enforcement and communities to work together to address threats to school safety.

Parents and guardians were urged to take an active role in their children's school lives and regularly discuss the dangers associated with drugs, weapons, bullying and peer pressure.

They were also encouraged to pay attention to changes in their children's behaviour and maintain open communication to ensure that learners receive support when facing difficulties.
