SAPS sets up task team after four women’s bodies found in Kempton Park

Police have intensified investigations and established a dedicated multidisciplinary task team after the bodies of four women were discovered in the Kempton Park area over about two months.

The latest body was found on Saturday evening, with detectives identifying concerning similarities in the circumstances surrounding the deaths.

According to preliminary information, the women were found partially undressed and had visible bruising. The bodies were also discovered in the same general vicinity, particularly around Rhodesfield.

While the South African Police Service (SAPS) has not confirmed that the deaths are linked to a serial killer, the similarities have prompted police to issue a warning to women and intensify their investigation.

The Acting National Commissioner, Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane, has directed the Gauteng provincial commissioner to establish a dedicated task team to determine whether the cases are connected.

The team will include detectives from specialised units, including the Murder and Robbery Unit and Investigative Psychology Unit, as well as other relevant disciplines.

Gauteng Deputy Provincial Commissioner Major General Mbuso Khumalo will lead the task team.

Police have urged women in Kempton Park, particularly around Rhodesfield, to avoid walking or exercising alone in isolated areas and, where possible, to travel or exercise in groups.

SAPS is also appealing to residents, motorists, security personnel and other members of the public who may have witnessed suspicious activity in the area to come forward.
