SAPS launches probe into injury of K9 Sky at veterinary facility

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the injury of Sky, a former operational K9, at one of the police service’s training and veterinary facilities.

Acting National Commissioner Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane has appointed a senior officer to investigate the incident, including Sky’s accommodation, supervision, care and whether applicable procedures and standards were followed.

SAPS said it was “deeply concerned” about Sky’s injury and that she was receiving veterinary care.

According to the police, Sky was no longer an operational K9 and had a history of escaping from kennels at her previous K9 base in Limpopo.

She was subsequently moved to the veterinary facility while arrangements were being made to place her with a suitable new owner. The donation process was still underway when the incident occurred.

SAPS said it would cooperate fully with the investigation and cautioned against attributing negligence or wrongdoing before all the facts had been established.

The police service said it remained committed to animal welfare and that its K9s should be treated with “care, dignity and compassion”.

“Should any shortcomings be identified, appropriate action will be taken,” SAPS said.

The immediate focus, it added, was on Sky’s recovery and ensuring that she received the necessary care.
