Police arrest suspect after high-speed chase, recover R180,000 in illicit cigarettes

A 30-year-old man has been arrested following a high-speed police chase in Limpopo that led to the recovery of illicit cigarettes worth an estimated R180,000.

The incident happened on Saturday evening in the Phaudi policing area.

According to police, an officer was patrolling near Kanana Village at about 18:00 when he spotted a suspicious white Toyota bakkie travelling towards Kolopo Village.

The officer attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver allegedly refused to pull over and sped away, prompting police to launch a pursuit.

The chase came to an end when the fleeing vehicle suffered a puncture between Rankhuwe and Madigoro villages.

Police arrested one suspect, while another allegedly abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot.

A search of the bakkie uncovered boxes and cartons containing Blue Remington Gold illicit cigarettes valued at approximately R180,000.

The vehicle was also confiscated as part of the ongoing investigation.

Police are continuing their efforts to locate the second suspect.

The arrested man is expected to appear in court soon on charges of possession of illicit cigarettes.

Limpopo provincial commissioner Lieutenant General Jan Scheepers commended the police officers involved for their swift response and determination, saying their actions resulted in the suspect's arrest and the recovery of the illicit cigarettes.
