Midvaal unveils R49 million substation to boost electricity capacity

Midvaal Local Municipality has unveiled the newly completed Savanna City Substation, a R49 million project aimed at increasing electricity capacity and improving distribution in the rapidly growing area.

The municipality said the project was completed on time and within budget as part of its ongoing investment in infrastructure to provide communities with reliable and sustainable electricity services.

The construction included key electrical infrastructure built in accordance with Eskom standards and specifications, including a substation terrace and earthmat, plinths and foundations.

The project also included an 88kV control room with ventilation and warning signage, as well as 11kV switching rooms, a control room and a load control room.

An oil holding dam was constructed for the 88/11kV transformers, while yard stone was spread across the substation yard in line with required specifications.

According to the municipality, the project contributed to the local economy by creating at least 25 jobs during construction. Ten small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs) were also subcontracted to participate in the project.

Executive Mayor Peter Teixeira said the substation would play an important role in expanding Midvaal’s electricity infrastructure and meeting growing demand.

The municipality said the additional capacity would help unlock further development in Savanna City and ensure that infrastructure keeps pace with population and economic growth.

Midvaal said continued investment in electricity infrastructure remains essential to supporting sustainable development and improving service delivery across the municipality.
