Mechanic arrested for impersonating RTI officer

A mechanic in Jozini, KwaZulu-Natal, has been arrested after allegedly driving a Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) vehicle that had been booked into a local workshop for repairs.

He was reportedly found driving the state vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, accompanied by his girlfriend and three friends.

He faces six charges, including impersonating a traffic officer, abuse and malicious damage to a state vehicle, driving without the owner’s consent, drunk driving and driving without a licence.

Transport MEC Siboniso Duma says the workshop was legally responsible for safeguarding the state vehicle and should face consequences for the alleged negligence.
