Mdletshe family escapes unharmed after mudslide destroys home in KZN

The Mdletshe family in Tshelimnyama, west of Durban, escaped unharmed after a mudslide caused by prolonged heavy rainfall destroyed their home.

KwaZulu-Natal Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC Rev. Thulasizwe Buthelezi commended the family for acting swiftly after Mduduzi Mdletshe realised that the property had become unsafe.

Mdletshe evacuated seven family members from the home. Hours later, a mudslide struck the property, destroying the house.

Three vehicles belonging to families living on neighbouring properties were also swept away in the incident.

Buthelezi expressed sympathy to the Mdletshe, Latha and Khwela families, who suffered property and vehicle losses. Disaster response teams have been deployed to assist affected residents with relief and safe shelter.

The MEC urged communities affected by the heavy rains to remain vigilant and evacuate immediately if their homes or surrounding areas become unsafe.

“No property is worth risking a life,” Buthelezi said.
