Mbeki visits Mashatile as deputy president recovers at home

Former president Thabo Mbeki has paid a courtesy visit to Deputy President Paul Mashatile, who remains at home on medical leave following a minor medical procedure.

Mbeki visited Mashatile at his home on Thursday, 17 September, accompanied by Max Boqwana, chief executive officer of the Thabo Mbeki Foundation.

Mashatile described the visit as “cordial and assuring” and expressed his appreciation to Mbeki and others who have sent messages of support during his recovery.

The Deputy President said his recovery was progressing well and that he was regaining strength each day.

According to the Presidency, Mashatile underwent a minor medical procedure and was discharged after receiving medical care and observation. His doctors have advised him to continue resting until they determine that he is ready to resume his full programme.

Despite being on medical leave, Mashatile said work and delegated responsibilities continued through his office.

The Presidency has not disclosed the nature of Mashatile’s illness or the medical procedure, citing his right to medical privacy. It has also cautioned against speculation and the circulation of unverified claims about his health.

Mashatile said he was looking forward to returning to his duties “in full” and serving the country with renewed energy and commitment.

The visit by Mbeki comes as Mashatile continues his recovery at home and remains under medical guidance before returning to his official programme.
