'Mashatile fell ill at home, underwent minor surgery': Presidency reports

Deputy President Paul Mashatile fell ill at his home in Johannesburg and was later admitted to hospital, where he underwent a minor surgical procedure.

The Office of the Deputy President confirmed on Sunday that Mashatile became unwell at home and sought medical attention under the supervision of his medical team.

He was admitted for the procedure and observation before being discharged and continuing his recovery.

The office said Mashatile was “recovering well” and remained in contact with his office while his official programme and responsibilities were being managed during his recovery.

Despite his health setback, Mashatile joined Parliament and participated virtually in other crucial meetings related to his work.

The office's statement followed a report by Sunday World concerning his health and absence from some public engagements.

The Office of the Deputy President said it would not comment on speculative or unverified claims about his condition, citing Mashatile’s right to medical privacy.

It urged the public and media to rely on information issued through official channels rather than speculation or anonymous sources.

Mashatile thanked those who had sent messages of support and well wishes and said he looked forward to returning to his full programme of official engagements when advised by his medical team.
