Suspect arrested for tampering with electrical infrastructure in Kempton Park
A 29-year-old undocumented man has been arrested for allegedly tampering with essential infrastructure along the R21 freeway in Kempton Park.
The man was arrested by Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) O.R. Tambo Precinct officers at about 07:30 on Tuesday.
According to the EMPD, officers were conducting patrols along the R21, just after the Atlas Road off-ramp, when they allegedly caught the suspect tampering with electrical infrastructure.
He was allegedly found in possession of aluminium cable and tools believed to have been used to cut cables from an electrical box.
The suspect was arrested and detained at the Kempton Park Police Station. He is expected to appear in the relevant magistrate's court.
In a separate incident later that day, at about 15:45, EMPD officers were deployed after suspects were reportedly seen removing cables from infrastructure along the R21.
The incident was captured by Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) cameras monitoring the freeway, which assisted officers in responding.
When officers arrived at the identified location, they found that copper cables had been dug up and removed. However, no suspects were found at the scene.
