Madlanga Commission sets its sights on JMPD over alleged criminal network infiltration

The Madlanga Commission will turn its attention to the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) when its public hearings resume on Tuesday, amid serious allegations of criminal network infiltration and collusion between officers and criminal syndicates.

The commission is scheduled to resume its hearings on 15 September 2026 after a short recess.

According to spokesperson Jeremy Michael, the focus will shift to the JMPD, one of the law enforcement agencies specifically listed in the commission’s terms of reference.

On Day 173 of the hearings, the commission will hear evidence relating to allegations that criminal networks have infiltrated the JMPD and that some officers have allegedly colluded with criminal syndicates.

The hearings are expected to examine the nature and extent of the alleged links between members of the metropolitan police department and criminal networks, as well as how such relationships may have affected law enforcement operations in Johannesburg.

The commission’s focus on the JMPD comes as it continues its investigation into allegations of corruption, criminality and the infiltration of law enforcement structures.

The evidence presented during the hearings could shed light on allegations involving JMPD officers and the alleged influence of criminal syndicates within the department.

Further testimony is expected to provide insight into the extent of the alleged infiltration and whether internal mechanisms were sufficient to detect and prevent such conduct.
