Johannesburg earns global recognition for bridging green divide

Johannesburg has earned international recognition after its “Greening of the City of Joburg, as part of Bridging the Green Divide” initiative was named a Highly Commended Finalist in the Living Green for Health and Wellbeing category of the AIPH World Green City Awards 2026.

The announcement was made in Bari, Italy, placing Johannesburg among the final three international initiatives in the category.

The initiative seeks to address historical inequalities in access to trees, parks and quality green spaces through projects including the Greening Soweto Legacy Project.

MMC for Community Development Thapelo Amad said the recognition demonstrated the importance of environmental equity in the city's development.

“Bridging the green divide means ensuring that where you live does not determine whether you have access to trees, parks and healthy public spaces,” Amad said.

JCPZ managing director Thanduxolo Mendrew said the recognition belonged to employees, communities and partners who have contributed to Johannesburg's greening journey.

The recognition comes during Arbor Month, as JCPZ continues efforts to protect and expand the city's ageing tree canopy.
