JMPD launches manhunt after officer disarmed of service firearm in Lenasia

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) has launched a manhunt for several suspects who allegedly disarmed an on-duty officer of his service firearm in Lenasia on Thursday.

According to the JMPD, the officer was performing official duties in the area when he was accosted by multiple male suspects.

The suspects allegedly managed to disarm the officer before fleeing the scene in a getaway vehicle towards the Golden Highway.

The officer was not seriously injured during the incident. The JMPD said medical and wellness support had been activated to assist him following the ordeal.

The department condemned the attack, saying assaults on law enforcement officers posed a direct threat to the safety of communities.

“Dedicated units, in collaboration with law enforcement partners, are actively investigating the matter to recover the weapon and bring those responsible to justice,” the JMPD said.

Police are appealing to anyone with information that could assist investigators in locating the suspects or recovering the stolen firearm to come forward.
