Impendle municipality given 48 hours to pay outstanding salaries

KwaZulu-Natal Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC Thulasizwe Buthelezi has given Impendle Local Municipality 48 hours to pay employees who have not received their salaries.

Buthelezi instructed the municipality’s administrator to urgently resolve the salary crisis, expressing concern about the impact on workers and municipal operations.

“It is morally unacceptable for workers to work and not get paid. In this regard, I have directed the Administrator to ensure that all outstanding salaries are paid within 48 hours,” he said.

The MEC said the non-payment of salaries undermined workers’ dignity, municipal functionality and service delivery to residents.

The department said it remained committed to strengthening consequence management, restoring stability in local government and ensuring uninterrupted service delivery in KwaZulu-Natal.

The municipality is expected to settle all outstanding salaries within the 48-hour deadline.
