Illegal dumping crisis prompts joint response from Emfuleni, Midvaal and Gauteng

Illegal dumping along the border of Emfuleni and Midvaal municipalities has reached a critical point, with waste spilling towards the R59 and raising concerns over the safety of motorists, surrounding communities and the environment.

Emfuleni Executive Mayor Hassan Mako, Midvaal Executive Mayor Peter Teixeira and Gauteng MEC Ewan Botha visited the affected area to assess the extent of the problem.

The site has become a major eyesore, with illegally dumped waste accumulating along the roadside and encroaching on areas surrounding the R59.

The worsening situation has highlighted the need for municipalities and provincial authorities to work together to address illegal dumping, which continues to undermine efforts to maintain clean and safe communities.

The authorities said illegal dumping could not be allowed to become normalised and requires decisive intervention, stronger enforcement and greater cooperation between the affected municipalities and the provincial government.

The growing waste problem also poses potential environmental risks while creating dangerous conditions for motorists using the busy R59.
