Hawks arrest 10 suspected illegal miners in Klerksdorp

Ten suspects, including a 16-year-old, have been arrested in a multi-disciplinary operation targeting alleged illegal mining and the unlawful possession of gold in Klerksdorp, North West.

The suspects, aged between 16 and 47, were arrested on Tuesday, 25 August 2026, by members of the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation in collaboration with the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) and Jouberton SAPS.

The Hawks said the operation followed information that suspects were allegedly processing gold at a plot in Klerksdorp. Trucks reportedly carrying suspected gold-bearing material were seen entering the property, which investigators believed was being used for processing.

The team acted on the information and proceeded to the property, where they allegedly found 10 suspects.

According to the Hawks, the suspects attempted to flee when police arrived, but officers managed to corner and arrest them.

Police seized bags containing suspected gold-bearing material, mining equipment and two vehicles during the operation.

The suspects are expected to appear in the Klerksdorp Magistrates’ Court, where they will face charges of illegal mining, unlawful possession of gold and contravention of the Immigration Act.

The investigation is continuing.
