Gauteng schools raided in crackdown on weapons, drugs and gangsterism

Gauteng Education MEC Lebogang Maile has led school search and seizure operations across the Vaal as authorities intensify efforts to tackle dangerous weapons, substance abuse, gangsterism and other criminal activities in schools.

The operations were conducted at Sehopotso Secondary School and Botebo-Tsebo Secondary School in Sebokeng, Residentia Secondary School in Vanderbijlpark, Sapphire Secondary School in Bophelong, as well as Mahareng Secondary School and Lekoa Shandu Secondary School in Sharpeville.

The operation was led by the South African Police Service (SAPS), with support from Gauteng Provincial Traffic Police, Gauteng Crime Prevention Wardens, Community Policing Forums and other law enforcement partners.

Authorities searched the schools and recovered prohibited items, including weapons.

Maile said the operations were aimed at ensuring schools remain safe and conducive environments for teaching and learning.

The crackdown comes amid ongoing concerns about weapons, drugs, gangsterism and other criminal activities affecting learners and disrupting education in Gauteng schools.

“We want our schools to be safe and conducive environments for teaching and learning,” Maile said.

The MEC said law enforcement agencies would continue working with schools and communities to address criminality and ensure the safety of learners and educators.
