Eastern Cape constable in custody over alleged rape of 15-year-old

A 32-year-old police constable remains in custody after being arrested in connection with the alleged rape of a 15-year-old girl in Gqeberha, Eastern Cape.

The constable was arrested on 19 September following an investigation into allegations that he raped the minor at Mjiba Street in Greenfields.

He appeared in the Gqeberha Magistrates' Court on Monday and was remanded in custody.

The constable is expected to return to court on Tuesday, 22 September, for a formal bail application.

Police said the investigation was continuing.

Eastern Cape police management reiterated that officers are expected to uphold the law, protect communities and conduct themselves with integrity and professionalism.

It said any police officer suspected of committing a criminal offence would be subjected to the same criminal justice processes as any other person.

“No one is above the law,” police said.
