DA councillor, three others in court over Benoni murder, kidnapping

A Democratic Alliance (DA) councillor and three co-accused have appeared in the Benoni Magistrate's Court facing charges of murder, attempted murder and kidnapping.

Kabelo Relitilwe Mahonko, 40, appeared alongside Sibusiso Masondo, 43, Muzi Des Godie, 33, and Lethabo Nhlanhla Makgabo, 19.

The four are accused of kidnapping and assaulting 23-year-old Vuyisile Mzwakhe Khananda and another person after allegedly accusing them of breaking into and stealing from Mahonko's home.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), the incident happened between 16 and 17 July 2026.

It is alleged that the accused assaulted the two victims before driving them to Longmore Street in Crystal Park, Benoni, where they were abandoned.

Both victims were taken to hospital for medical treatment. Khananda later died from his injuries.

The NPA said police investigations led to the arrests of the four accused on various dates between 17 and 21 August.

They have remained in custody since their arrests.

The matter was postponed to 1 September for a formal bail application.

NPA regional spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana said the State intended to oppose bail.

The accused face charges of murder relating to Khananda's death, as well as attempted murder and kidnapping.

The allegations against the four have not been tested in court and they are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
