City Power technician arrested for allegedly demanding R3,000 bribe

City Power CEO Charles Tlouane has welcomed the arrest of a technician accused of demanding R3,000 from a Norwood customer in exchange for restoring electricity.

The employee, who works under the Inner City Service Delivery Centre, was arrested on Tuesday following a sting operation conducted by City Power’s Corporate Investigations and Security Risk Management services, in collaboration with the Hawks.

The customer reported an outage at his residence on 26 July 2026. The technician attended to the logged fault but allegedly later demanded R3,000 to restore the electricity. Although a contractor restored the supply on 4 August, the technician allegedly continued demanding payment.

He appeared in court on Wednesday facing an extortion charge.

Tlouane said City Power would not tolerate corruption or employees abusing their positions to solicit money from customers.

Customers are urged to report suspected corruption or extortion to City Power’s security control room.
