Cat Matlala attempted murder trial resumes in High Court

The attempted murder trial involving controversial businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala and four co-accused has resumed in the Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg.

Matlala is on trial alongside Tsakani Matlala, Musa Kekana, Tiego Floyd Mabusela and Zandile Nthabiseng Nzama.

The court is currently hearing a trial-within-a-trial to determine whether evidence obtained during Kekana’s arrest is admissible.

Kekana’s lawyer is challenging the evidence and has raised allegations that he was assaulted and tortured following his arrest.

Medical doctor Dr Panicker testified about Kekana’s allegations and the nature and timing of the medical treatment he received after his arrest.

The main trial remains suspended while the court deals with the admissibility of the disputed evidence.

The five accused face 25 charges linked to three alleged attempted murder incidents between August 2022 and January 2024.

The charges include attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder, unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition, money laundering and fraud.

The matter resumes on Tuesday.
