Rapist sentenced to life for preying on mentally disabled colleague at workplace

Pietermaritzburg – A 34-year-old man has been sentenced to life imprisonment after being convicted of raping his mentally disabled colleague three times at their workplace in Pietermaritzburg.The man, who was known to the 33-year-old woman, befriended her before sexually assaulting her on three separate occasions between 2022 and 2023.The Pietermaritzburg Regional Court also declared him unfit to possess a firearm and ordered that his name be entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders.According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), the woman's mother became concerned about her daughter's wellbeing after noticing changes in her behaviour.When questioned by her mother, the woman disclosed that she had been raped. Her mother then reported the matter to the police, leading to the man's arrest.The woman was subsequently referred to the Edendale Thuthuzela Care Centre, where she received medical and psychosocial support.During the trial, prosecutor Jabulani Maphumulo led evidence from the complainant, her mother and the doctor who examined her.The State also presented a clinical psychologist's report assessing the woman's mental capacity.In aggravation of sentence, the court considered a victim impact statement prepared by the complainant with the assistance of court preparation officer Nonhle Nokuzola Cemane.In the statement, the woman described the lasting impact of the rapes, saying she now lives in fear and prefers to isolate herself from other people.The NPA welcomed the sentence, saying it demonstrated the criminal justice system's commitment to protecting vulnerable people and holding perpetrators of sexual offences accountable.The prosecution authority said it remained committed to combating sexual offences and gender-based violence.It also highlighted the role played by Thuthuzela Care Centres in supporting survivors of sexual violence. The network has expanded from 55 centres in 2020/21 to 66 centres across South Africa.The centres provide integrated medical, legal and psychosocial services to survivors while also supporting the prosecution of sexual offences.Natasha Ramkisson-Kara, NPA Regional Spokesperson for the KwaZulu-Natal Division, said the successful prosecution demonstrated the importance of ensuring justice for vulnerable victims.
