Brave Vaal journalist Ntate Kent honoured with Investigative Journalism Excellence Award

A huge congratulations to Mr Ismael “Kent” Sethabela of K-H.D Media House on receiving the Sedibeng District Excellence Award for Investigative Journalism for the 2025/2026 period.

Sethabela, popularly known as Ntate Kent in the Vaal, was recognised for his bravery, dedication and persistence in pursuing challenging investigative stories that have had a meaningful impact on communities.

His commitment to truthful and ethical reporting has also been evident in his defence of journalistic principles. Recently, he successfully defended himself in court after a woman accused him of failing to provide a right of reply. The matter was dismissed, reaffirming the importance of fair and responsible journalism.

The award recognises his outstanding contribution to investigative journalism, unwavering commitment to uncovering the truth, and dedication to promoting transparency, accountability and public awareness through impactful reporting.

In his message of appreciation, Ntate Kent thanked SAPS Sedibeng District, the Vaal community, Babakhubeka, Zoo Mokoena, the late Tsatsi Tseke, Thetha FM, the late Tumelo Mofokeng, K-H.D Media House, Mr Ntsele, as well as his friends and family for their support throughout his journey.

Perhaps the most powerful part of his message was his reminder that journalism is about service rather than recognition:

> “The aim is not to win awards. The aim is to play my part.”

That is the true spirit of community journalism — telling stories, asking difficult questions, giving communities a voice and contributing to positive change.
