Boksburg driver arrested with firearm, ammunition and suspected crystal meth

A driver has been arrested in Boksburg after Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) officers allegedly found an unlicensed firearm, live ammunition and suspected crystal meth in his vehicle.

The man was arrested by EMPD Overload Control Unit officers on Wednesday, 16 September 2026, during patrols along Leeuwpoort Road.

According to EMPD spokesperson Chief Superintendent Kelebogile Thepa, officers stopped a suspicious black-and-white Nissan Elgrand minibus bearing an Eswatini registration plate.

A search of the vehicle allegedly uncovered a bottle of vodka behind the driver's seat, live ammunition on the passenger seat and a silver .38 Special calibre firearm lying on the floor behind the driver's seat.

Several zip-lock bags containing a substance suspected to be crystal meth were also allegedly found in the vehicle.

Police administered a breathalyser test to the driver, which allegedly indicated that he was intoxicated.

The man was subsequently arrested and detained at Boksburg police station.

He faces charges of driving under the influence of alcohol, driving without a valid driver's licence, possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, and possession of suspected drugs.

He is expected to appear in the Boksburg Magistrates' Court soon.
