53-year-old man abandons bail bid in Refilwe Spring Day stabbing case

A 53-year-old man accused of fatally stabbing a young man during a Spring Day celebration in Refilwe, east of Pretoria, has abandoned his bail application.

The accused appeared in the Cullinan Magistrate’s Court, where he faces a charge of murder stemming from an incident in Refilwe Extension 3 on 1 September 2026.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), a group of young people were celebrating Spring Day by pouring water on each other and people passing by.

It is alleged that the group attempted to pour water on the accused as he walked past.

The accused allegedly responded by taking out a knife and stabbing one of the group members.

The victim was rushed to a local clinic but later died from his injuries.

The accused was arrested on the same day at Ekangala Hospital after he was allegedly apprehended and assaulted by members of the community.

Following his decision to abandon his bail application, the matter was postponed to 27 October 2026 for further investigations.

The accused remains in custody.

The case is being prosecuted by the NPA’s Gauteng Division in Pretoria.
