Woman remanded in custody after 196kg of dagga seized in Limpopo

A 46-year-old woman has been remanded in custody following the seizure of nearly 197kg of dagga during a police operation in Limpopo.

Witty Morategi Malikana appeared in the Kgapane Magistrate's Court on Friday, 18 September 2026, facing a charge of dealing in dagga.

The matter was postponed to 22 September for further police investigations.

Her arrest followed information received from E2 Border about a suspicious maroon Toyota Hilux travelling along the R36 towards Tzaneen on Thursday.

Members of the Mopani Tracking Team spotted a vehicle matching the description shortly after Mokgoba Village at about 1.15pm.

The vehicle was intercepted and stopped in the Modjadjiskloof area for inspection.

Police searched the vehicle and found 19 compressed bags of dagga concealed inside.

The driver, Malikana, was arrested and the dagga was later weighed, with a combined weight of 196.905kg and an estimated street value of R108,350.

The dagga, vehicle and cellular phones were seized as part of the investigation.

The operation involved the Mopani Tracking Team, supported by Modjadjiskloof Visible Policing, Highway Patrol, Hoshani Security and the K9 Anti-Hijacking Unit.

Limpopo provincial commissioner Lieutenant General Jan Scheepers commended the teams involved, saying the operation demonstrated SAPS's commitment to combating drug trafficking and related crimes in the province.

Police investigations are continuing.
