Taxi crash leaves 16 injured in Daveyton

Sixteen people were injured, including two critically, when a Toyota Siyaya taxi crashed into stationary tyre repair containers at the intersection of Eiselen and Sibeko streets in Daveyton, Ekurhuleni, on Friday afternoon.

The Etwatwa fire station rescue team was dispatched to the scene at about 14:50 after receiving reports of the crash.

On arrival, rescuers found the taxi driver trapped behind the steering wheel. The other 15 passengers had already been removed from the vehicle by members of the public.

Firefighters safely extricated the trapped driver using specialised rescue equipment and techniques.

Gauteng Provincial Government Ambulance Services dispatched several ambulances to transport the injured to medical facilities across Ekurhuleni.

Two adults – the male driver and a female passenger – sustained critical injuries and were prioritised under the medical triage system.

Two other passengers, an adult and a 15-year-old boy, sustained serious injuries but were reported to be in a stable condition.

The remaining 12 passengers sustained minor trauma. All 16 occupants were transported to various medical facilities for further treatment.

The occupants of the tyre repair containers were not injured.

It is alleged that the taxi was travelling at high speed when its braking system failed as it approached the intersection, resulting in the crash. The circumstances surrounding the collision have not yet been confirmed.

The scene was handed over to law enforcement officers, who began investigations into the incident.
