Shebeshxt trial postponed to May 2027

The trial of controversial Limpopo musician Lehlohonolo Chauke, better known as Shebe Maburna, has been postponed to May 2027.

Chauke’s trial was postponed by the Polokwane Regional Court to 17 to 21 May 2027 following a pre-trial conference held on Thursday.

Regional spokesperson Mashudu Malabi said the State intends to call 22 witnesses during the trial.

“During the pre-trial conference, the State indicated that it intends to call 22 witnesses,” Malabi said.

Chauke faces 21 charges, including four counts of attempted murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, assault, assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, reckless and negligent driving, and culpable homicide.

Malabi said the defence had not yet confirmed how many witnesses it would call, as it first needed to familiarise itself with the case.

“The defence indicated that they will indicate to the court how many witnesses they intend to call after familiarising themselves with the case, and that they will be able to provide an outline of their defence,” he said.

The defence also indicated that it intends to bring a bail application based on new facts and make representations to the Director of Public Prosecutions.

It further plans to apply for the recusal of presiding magistrate Felleng Ntilane on the grounds of alleged bias.

“The allegation has not been determined by the court, and the magistrate remains seized with the matter pending the outcome of any recusal application,” Malabi said.

The trial is now scheduled to proceed from 17 to 21 May 2027.
