Mayor Mako urges title deed holders to protect their homes through wills

Emfuleni Local Municipality Executive Mayor Hassan Mako has urged residents who own properties, including RDP homes, to use National Wills Week to ensure their homes are legally passed on to their chosen beneficiaries.

Mako made the appeal as South Africa observes National Wills Month in September, with National Wills Week scheduled for 14 to 18 September 2026.

During the week, participating attorneys will offer basic will-drafting services free of charge.

Mako said thousands of Emfuleni residents had received RDP houses and title deeds through government housing programmes, making it important for property owners to ensure their estates were properly planned.

“A house is more than just brick and mortar. It represents dignity, security, and a foundation for future generations,” Mako said.

He warned that residents who die without valid wills can leave their families facing disputes over ownership of their homes.

According to Mako, the absence of a will can lead to conflict among children, relatives and partners, while estates can become entangled in legal processes that make it difficult for families to transfer, sell or legally occupy properties.

He said vulnerable family members could also face homelessness or expensive legal battles.

“Leaving a will is not about wealth; it is an act of deep love and responsibility,” Mako said.

He urged every title deed holder in Emfuleni to visit a participating attorney during National Wills Week and draw up a free basic will.

“Do not let your legacy become the source of your family’s division. Protect your home, secure your children’s future, and preserve the dignity of your household,” he said.
