Lt-Col Deena Govender is expected back on the stand at the Madlanga Commission this morning

Govender, a senior Hawks officer and former head of the KZN cash-in-transit task team, faces serious allegations over his alleged involvement in suspicious payments and police killings linked to task-team operations.

IPID investigator Len John previously alleged that Govender received money in suspicious payments, including money allegedly linked to the killing of Durban tow-truck operator Bevan Loftus.

Govender has denied wrongdoing.

He also made explosive counter-allegations before the Commission, claiming he was pressured to implicate KZN Police Commissioner Lt-Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi in police killings.

He alleged that the pressure came from individuals linked to suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu. Mchunu has denied the allegations.

Govender is also expected to face questions about the Morningside operation, task-team activities and the allegations against him.

An application to have parts of his evidence heard in camera has been rejected. He is therefore expected to give evidence in an open hearing, subject to specific protections ordered by the Commission.

His testimony could shed further light on the allegations surrounding KZN police task teams, the killings under investigation and the broader claims of criminal infiltration within the police.
