Lesufi condemns Wedela tavern massacre as Gauteng government mobilises after 17 deaths

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has condemned the deadly shooting at a tavern in Wedela, Carletonville, which left 17 people dead and 15 others injured, as the provincial government mobilises support for the affected community.

The shooting happened at about 21:30 on Saturday at Dora’s Tavern on Hector Peterson Street in Extension 3, where about eight armed men allegedly opened fire on patrons inside and outside the premises.

Five people — four men and one woman — were reportedly killed outside the tavern, while 12 others — nine men and three women — were killed inside. Gauteng Emergency Medical Services confirmed 17 fatalities at the scene.

Another 15 victims sustained gunshot wounds and were transported to hospitals in Carletonville and Leratong.

The suspects were allegedly armed with AK-47 rifles and pistols. They reportedly searched patrons and stole an undisclosed number of cellphones before fleeing in two unidentified vehicles. Two vehicles were also reportedly set alight.

As head of the Gauteng provincial government, Lesufi condemned the attack and called for law-enforcement agencies to use all available resources to identify and arrest those responsible.

“We are deeply shocked and saddened by this senseless loss of life. There can be no justification for such an attack on innocent people. Our thoughts are with the bereaved families and everyone affected by this horrific incident,” Lesufi said.

The South African Police Service has launched a major investigation, with a crime scene investigation team, including the National CSI Task Team, processing the scene.

The provincial government has welcomed the mobilisation of SAPS personnel and emergency services, including Acting West Rand District Commissioner Brigadier Xaba and Gauteng Emergency Medical Services.

Lesufi’s administration said the motive for the attack and the identities of the perpetrators remain under investigation.

The provincial government has urged anyone with information that could assist police to come forward, while warning communities against spreading speculation, unverified information or graphic material on social media.

The provincial government will work with SAPS, the West Rand District Municipality, Merafong City Municipality and other stakeholders to support the affected families and community and ensure that psychosocial and other support services are made available.
