Klerksdorp rape offenders receive lengthy prison sentences

Four rape cases investigated by the Klerksdorp Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit have resulted in lengthy prison sentences, including a life sentence, in the Klerksdorp Regional Court.

In the first two cases, 38-year-old Freddy Thobedi was sentenced to 10 years’ direct imprisonment for each of two separate rape convictions.

The first incident occurred on 16 July 2022 when Thobedi, who was the boyfriend of the victim’s cousin, offered to assist a 27-year-old woman who was looking for transport to Jouberton.

The court heard that Thobedi took her to a house without electricity, threatened her with a knife and raped her.

In the second case, Thobedi raped a 39-year-old neighbour in September 2021 after offering to accompany her to collect a wheelbarrow in Kanana Extension 14.

Thobedi appeared in the Klerksdorp Regional Court on 21 September 2026 on both charges.

In a separate case, 34-year-old Ishmael Tsholofelo Montsho was sentenced to life imprisonment after being convicted of rape.

The court heard that the 29-year-old victim was sleeping with her three-year-old child at her boyfriend’s home when Montsho entered the house and climbed into bed with her while she was asleep.

The victim initially believed the intruder was her boyfriend, but switched on the light and realised it was Montsho.

Montsho appeared in court on 22 September 2026.

In the fourth case, 28-year-old Tisetso Matolo was sentenced to 20 years’ direct imprisonment for raping his 21-year-old former girlfriend.

The incident occurred on 23 September 2023 when Matolo allegedly forced the woman to leave with him. When she refused, he dragged her to his residence and raped her.

Matolo appeared before the Klerksdorp Regional Court on 16 September 2026.

The court also ordered that Matolo’s name be entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders. The convicted offenders were further declared unfit to possess firearms in terms of Section 103 of the Firearms Control Act, Act 60 of 2000.

The cases were investigated by Detective Sergeant Ramotshiwa Abel Roberts and Detective Constable Tumisang Lobakeng of the Klerksdorp FCS Unit.

North West Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Arthur Peter Adams commended the investigators, prosecutor Wilna Cordier and other role-players involved in securing the convictions.

Adams said the sentences demonstrated that gender-based violence-related crimes would not be tolerated.
