City of Johannesburg warns residents as heavy rains raise flooding risk

The City of Johannesburg has urged residents and motorists to exercise extreme caution as heavy rains continue to increase the risk of flooding across several areas.

Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Public Safety, Cllr Moshe Koma, warned residents to take flooding seriously and evacuate immediately if they are in areas where rising water poses a threat to life or property.

Motorists have been urged to:

* Avoid crossing flooded roads, low-lying bridges and areas where water levels are rising.

* Never attempt to drive through moving or fast-flowing water.

* Reduce speed and exercise extreme caution on wet roads.

* Maintain a safe following distance from other vehicles.

* Avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rainfall where possible.

Residents are also encouraged to report road, stormwater and flooding-related emergencies to the relevant City standby teams so that incidents can be assessed and attended to as quickly as possible.

The City’s entities, including the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) and CoJ Transport, are continuing to respond to incidents and assist communities affected by the severe weather conditions.

“The safety of our residents remains our highest priority. We urge everyone to take heavy rainfall and flooding seriously. Do not put your life at risk by attempting to cross flooded roads or remain in areas where water levels are rising. If you are at risk, evacuate immediately and seek a place of safety,” Koma said.

Residents are urged to remain vigilant, follow official weather and emergency advisories, and cooperate with emergency personnel and law-enforcement officials on the ground.
