Residents are strongly cautioned about the approach of severe thunderstorms accompanied by high winds. These conditions pose risks of flash flooding, downed trees and power lines, property damage, and hazardous driving.
Safety at Home
* Stay indoors and away from windows and glass doors.
* Secure outdoor furniture, waste bins and other loose objects that could become projectiles.
* Unplug non-essential electronics and appliances to protect them from power surges.
Safety on the Road
* Avoid unnecessary travel. If you must drive, reduce speed and increase following distance.
* Watch for sudden wind gusts, fallen branches, debris, and flooded roadways.
* If conditions become severe, find a safe location away from trees, power lines, and overpasses.
* Never drive through standing water, turn around.
Electricity Conservation
To reduce strain on the electricity grid during and after the severe weather (when outages and restoration efforts are likely), residents are urged to use electricity sparingly:
* Turn off lights, televisions, computers, and appliances that are not essential.
* Delay non-urgent charging of devices and use of high-draw equipment (such as air conditioners, electric heaters, or ovens) when possible.
Residents are advised to remain vigilant and follow instructions from local emergency management and weather authorities.
