Two arrested as police recover firearms and ammunition in Lotus Gardens

Gauteng police have arrested two 31-year-old suspects and recovered firearms and ammunition during an intelligence-driven operation in Lotus Gardens, Pretoria, on Wednesday.

The operation involved Crime Intelligence, Tactical and Special Operations, Gauteng Highway Patrol, Pretoria West Detectives and Vusela Covert.

Police said the operation followed intelligence linking the suspects to ATM bombings, ATM safe pull-outs, drop-safe bombings and business robberies in Gauteng and neighbouring provinces.

The information was operationalised and police searched a residence in Lotus Gardens, where a woman initially told officers she was alone. During the search, one of the suspects was found hiding underneath a bed.

The investigation led police to a second premises linked to the other suspect, which was also searched.

Police recovered a Z88 pistol and a semi-automatic rifle, both with their serial numbers filed off. Rifle ammunition and magazines were also recovered during a search of a motor vehicle.

The two suspects were arrested for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

They are expected to appear before the Atteridgeville Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 25 September.
