MEC Macie warns motorists to obey road rules as school holidays and Heritage Day weekend begin

Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Jackie Macie has urged motorists to exercise caution as increased traffic volumes are expected during the school holidays and Heritage Day long weekend.

Macie said major routes across the province are expected to become busier as families travel for gatherings, religious pilgrimages and spring activities.

He warned that law enforcement officers would take action against motorists who drive recklessly or negligently.

“No reckless or negligent driver must be spared. Our officers have been instructed to act decisively against anyone who endangers lives on our roads,” Macie said.

He urged motorists not to drink and drive, obey the rules of the road and ensure their vehicles are roadworthy before embarking on their journeys.

Macie also appealed to public transport operators not to overload their vehicles and to ensure that they are roadworthy.

Drivers were advised to take regular breaks, with Macie recommending that they rest after every two hours or 200km of driving.

Motorists were further urged to allow extra travelling time because of roadworks and to adjust their driving according to weather conditions.

Macie said traffic law enforcement officers and emergency personnel would remain on high alert along major corridors throughout the period to enforce traffic laws and respond to emergencies.

The MEC urged all road users to prioritise safety to prevent crashes and loss of life during the busy travel period.
