Mako pushes for end to load reduction as Evaton re-electrification talks continue

Emfuleni Executive Mayor Hassan Mako has called for an end to prolonged electricity disruptions affecting communities, saying residents cannot be expected to live without reliable power indefinitely.

Mako is meeting with Eskom leaders and officials, councillors and other stakeholders in the Vanderbijlpark Mayor’s Parlour as discussions continue around the re-electrification of Evaton.

The mayor said electricity was essential for development, dignity and the functioning of the local economy.

“Our people cannot be inconvenienced in perpetuity, and at the same time, they have a responsibility to protect infrastructure,” Mako said.

The meeting is focused on finding solutions to the electricity challenges facing Evaton, including the continued use of load reduction.

Mako said communities needed reliable electricity while residents also had a responsibility to safeguard electricity infrastructure against vandalism and illegal connections.

The discussions form part of ongoing efforts to restore a stable electricity supply to Evaton.

Further details on the re-electrification process are expected to emerge as engagements between Emfuleni, Eskom and other stakeholders continue.
