Giyani man arrested for alleged murder of 82-year-old mother

Police in Giyani have arrested a 48-year-old man for the alleged murder of his 82-year-old mother at Xikukwani village.

The woman was found dead at her home during the early hours of Wednesday, 23 September 2026, after police received a murder report at about 01:00.

According to police, officers found the elderly woman lying on a bed with visible injuries to her head and face. Emergency Medical Services personnel certified her dead at the scene.

The deceased was reportedly living with her son, who initially told police that he had returned home from a drinking spree and found his mother lying on the bed with injuries to her face.

Police launched an investigation and subsequently linked the man to the murder. He was arrested and is facing a charge of murder.

Police are also investigating suspicions that the elderly woman may have been sexually assaulted. An additional rape charge could be added if sufficient evidence is established.

The suspect is expected to appear in the Giyani Magistrate's Court on Friday, 25 September.

Limpopo provincial commissioner Lieutenant General Jan Scheepers condemned the killing and called on communities to protect vulnerable people.

“The killing of an elderly mother, allegedly at the hands of her own son, is a shocking violation of the most basic values of humanity,” Scheepers said.

He said police would pursue the matter and that anyone found responsible must face the law.
