Gauteng MEC Maile mourns Lions rugby star Hyron Andrews

Gauteng Education, Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation MEC Lebogang Maile has expressed his condolences following the death of Lions rugby lock Hyron Andrews, who was on tour with the team at the time of his passing.
Maile said the Gauteng Provincial Government joined the international rugby fraternity in mourning the sudden death of the young player.
“On behalf of the Gauteng Provincial Government, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, friends, teammates, coaches, management and the broader rugby fraternity during this difficult time,” he said.
Andrews' death came as the Lions prepared to face French club La Rochelle, with the team expected to take to the field just hours after losing their teammate.
“Today, our hearts are heavy, and we think of the entire team as they prepare to play their match against La Rochelle just a few hours following the loss of their beloved teammate,” Maile said.
“There is no doubt that the passing of Hyron has affected the entire team, and we know the emotional weight this tragedy will have on the players, technical staff and everyone associated with the club.”
The MEC expressed solidarity with the Lions and encouraged players and staff to support one another as they navigated the difficult period.
“We want to pledge our solidarity with the entire team and encourage them to support one another as they walk onto the pitch today and hope that they will draw strength from the unity and resilience that sport teaches us,” he said.
Maile said Andrews was widely respected in the rugby community for his talent and commitment to the game.
He added that the player would be remembered for his contribution to the clubs he represented locally and abroad, as well as the Junior Springboks.
“May his soul rest in peace, and we hope that his family, the Lions Rugby team and the entire rugby fraternity find comfort and strength during this difficult moment of sorrow,” Maile said.
