eThekwini places emergency teams on high alert as severe storms approach

The eThekwini Municipality has placed its disaster management, fire and emergency services teams on high alert as severe thunderstorms, damaging winds and heavy rainfall are expected to affect the city.
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued a Level 4 warning for severe thunderstorms, valid from 13:00 until 23:59 on Monday, 19 October 2026.
A Level 2 warning for damaging winds is also in place from 11:00 on Monday until 06:59 on Tuesday, 20 October.
The municipality warned that the storms could bring heavy downpours, excessive lightning, possible hail and southerly winds reaching speeds of up to 83km/h.
These conditions could result in localised flooding, structural damage and hazardous driving conditions.
Emergency personnel have been placed on standby, while the Durban Metro Police Service will monitor flood-prone areas, manage traffic and close roads considered unsafe.
Residents have been urged to avoid unnecessary travel, remain indoors where possible and never drive or walk through flooded roads or fast-flowing water.
They have also been advised to secure loose outdoor items, move valuables above expected flood levels and stay away from beaches, rivers and the shoreline.
During lightning, residents should remain indoors, keep away from windows and unplug electrical appliances.
The municipality urged residents to follow official communication channels for weather updates.
In an emergency, residents can contact eThekwini Fire and Emergency Services on 031 361 0000.
