Bafana Mahungela convicted of murdering Sandton teacher Kirsten Kluyts

Bafana Mahungela, 23, has been convicted of murdering Sandton teacher Kirsten Kluyts, bringing a significant step towards justice for her family nearly three years after her death.

The Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg found Mahungela guilty of murder, kidnapping, attempted rape and defeating the administration of justice.

Kluyts was murdered on 29 October 2023 while participating in a run at George Lea Park in Sandton.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said state advocates Siyabonga Futshana and Leisha Surendra presented evidence linking Mahungela to the offences, including evidence relating to his movements on the day of the killing, as well as forensic and other corroborating evidence.

Several expert witnesses also testified during the lengthy trial.

According to the NPA, the State relied largely on circumstantial and forensic evidence to prove Mahungela's guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

In delivering judgment, the court found that while the State's case was largely circumstantial, the evidence had to be considered cumulatively and pointed conclusively to Mahungela's guilt.

The court also found that video footage presented by the State had been properly authenticated and was admissible as evidence.

A facial comparison expert further identified Mahungela as the person depicted in the footage.

The NPA welcomed the conviction, commending the prosecution team for its preparation and presentation of the evidence.

"This conviction represents an important step towards accountability for the tragic killing of Kluyts and offers a measure of justice to her family, friends, colleagues, and loved ones," the NPA said.

Mahungela's case has been postponed to 27 October 2026 for sentencing proceedings.
